New Computer Build - Need Feedback
« on: December 09, 2006, 08:58:29 PM »
Hey CyberNet lovers,
I'm building a new Vista Premium Ready PC in January and these are the parts I'm thinking about - let me know what you think:

CPU:  AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 2.2GHz Socket AM2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103747

Mobo:  ASUS M2N-E Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP ATX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131022

RAM:  CORSAIR XMS2 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145153

Hard Drive:  Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200RPM SATA
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148140

Optical:  Sony DVD/CD Burner
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827131039

GPU:  eVGA nVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-Bit GDDR3 PCI-e x16
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130062

Case:  NZXT Apollo Orange ATX Mid Tower
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16811146027

PSU:  PC Power & Cooling 610 Watt
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817703005

I'm basically looking for agreement that these particular parts will work together properly and will function properly together.  It's only my second computer build so I like to get feedback and make sure I choose the parts that are compatible.

Any help would be great - thanks so much!!  :)

Looks like all of that should work fine together. Looks like you're trying to be spiffy with that case. ;)

Yeah totally!  I was going to go with a Antec P180 cuz they rock and they're huge and reliable but then I saw this review of the Apollo on Techgage.com and it just is a rocking computer case!  I enjoy it!   :)

After you get it up and running you should post some pictures and let us know how it went.

Haha, no I've only got about $1000 give or take and I just wanted a fast build to run Windows Vista really well.  I'm a Windows OS freak so I love upgrading to their new OS's and Vista is going to be sweet.

Ryan - I'll def. post pictures and a follow up on how my build goes once I get my Windows Vista disc.  I've ordered the Case, PSU, and GPU so far and I'm waiting just a few weeks for the other parts.  Then when I get Windows Vista Business (should be 4-6 weeks from RTM according to Microsoft) I'll get this thing up and running! :)

2 gigs of ram if can afford it.

And, might want to save some money and get a cheaper video card. Because in 6 months from now you're gonna want a new one for Vista anyway when Direct X 10 cards get cheaper.

If you don't play games then I don't think you'll need an amazing graphics card for Vista. I have the ATI Radeo X300 which is almost as dirt cheap as you can get and I have never once had a lag or poor quality with Vista's Aero graphics. A really nice graphics card is really only need if you are a gamer, which I am definitely not.

True. If not a gamer will probly never really need a Direct X 10 card anyway.

But I would also, depending on your need, recommend a higher model then a 6800.

This is the exact card listed in first post.
XFX Geforce 6800XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail - $132.99

For just a couple dollars more I'd recommend.
XFX GeForce 7600GS 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail - $139.99

The uber powerful 6800's there offer raw clock speed performance, but a newer 7600 would offer probly barely any noticeable drop in performance due its twice the video ram, but support newer graphics technologys then the 6800 does, like newer pixel shader models, and would probly just last a lot longer as eventually with the 6800 you're going to hit a new game that requires the newer pixel shaders version that the 7 series have.

But again, depending on your need and what you actually prefer. Just pointing out something to think about.

id rather say get an intel conroe core they are actually the best gaming cpus around at the minute and don't exactly cost an arm and a leg.....amd are good just sadly the conroe is better at this minute in time

quickest thing i could find........

EDIT:

did a little more searching....

the 7600 is passive cooled....no way ! you should at least want the 7600 to overclock  (decently and by not buying a new fan there to anoying to install) having a new shader model at a lower clock is useless.....and getting something that works now and will last you for a longggggggggggggg long time (due to dx10 being only one card out atm the 8800 and the r600 which is 2 months of and prices at ?400 for a single card with no overclock (yes it is on the way) theres just no point!!!!)

oh and id also say drop the sony cd drive, sony are good but charge a little extra....so go for liteon, pioneer, asus or samsung all are good.... another tip just to keep the whole thing cool, is either pay a fortune on a good case, or not get a case with a door they normally  keep alot of air from escaping so id say the cooler master centurion they have one in red if your lookin for an orangy red colour scheme too...... but doors are useless unless its a thermaltake (cant spell or remember the name, but something like that, there are a few others).........plus the front grill on that case dosnt seem to do much.......a good case site (its uk but it'll give you a good reference is) www.xcase.co.uk......

it is a good system don't get me wrong im an amd boy but i do realise that intel has an ass kicking product and im definatly going to get that in my next upgrade !!!!! (crosses finger for cell processor coming onto the market)......

and one more thing..... if you dont get vista there will be dx 9.0L

By the way, anyone have any insight or input as to what EPS12V versus ATX12V is in regards to Power Supplies?

My PSU is above, the PC Power and Cooling high quality 610 Watt unit, but I just noticed that it says under Type: EPS12V instead of what I usually see which is ATX12V.

After some research I think EPS12V is backwards compatible with any ATX mobo.  So if that's true it should work with my ASUS mobo I have (also above).  Just wanted to see what others think.

By the way, I found out that my nVidia 6800XT graphics card is not so great - so I'm going to RMA it back to newegg and get an eVGA 7600GT.

Nothing really wrong with it, it would work just fine.  However, for the same price I can get a GeForce 7 series with more pixel pipelines and some better nVidia technology - so why not bump up my series instead of staying with the 6 series I figure.  Either way, I'm so excited cuz it's going to rock!
