Help with switching anti-virus software
« on: September 03, 2007, 05:28:50 PM »
My subscription to Norton anti-virus is running out and I can finally install something else on my system. I've heard a lot of good things about Avast, and AVG but I don't know which to download. Which would you guys recommend? I'm trying to go for a virus scanner that
  • is good at finding viruses
  • doesn't slow down PC startup/shutdown time
  • doesn't take up a lot of hard drive space
  • doesn't use up a lot of RAM when it's running in the background
  • preferably has auto-updates (for new versions of the software, not just virus definitions)

I'm leaning toward Avast, but the problem with that is that I installed it on my PC (I'm on my laptop now) and I'm not a big fan of having two system tray icons (it had that when I installed it, I don't know it if still has that).

Edit: Also, I wanted to know whether I should remove Norton with the Norton Removal Tool found on the Symantec website or with Revo Uninstaller.

Edit 2: I removed it with the Norton Removal Tool already. I started my search for a new anti-virus solution now.

Edit 3: My computer just thanked me for being a liberator. All my programs start faster now and so does my computer. Life after Norton is great.

I would go with avast. It uses less system resources.

You can have only one system tray icon with Avast. Just right click on one of em, and choose merge with other icon, combines both context menus into one and gives you only one icon.

Hmm, I didn't know that. Thanks for the tip xpgeek!

I'm probably going to go with Avast unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I think that is a good choice. It has never let me down yet (but then again I probably wouldn't know if it missed something :) ).

I never really understood why Avast creates two seperate icons, but I've always hated that. The first thing I always do after installing it is merge those icons.

I merge the icons as well. I don't think you will be sorry for choosing Avast, I have used it for years and I have never had a virus or even been slowed down by the active scanning that Avast runs.
