Free Anti-Virus, Which is your pick?
« on: December 07, 2006, 12:28:54 AM »
So I am asking the same old question again. In your opinion, which is the best free anti virus?

I have been using AVG for last 5 years, but now I heard that they are going to stop the Free edition. Now, I am bit confused about the other alternatives

Have your say!

Thanks,

I dual boot Win98SE & XP. Om 98 I use AVG Free and on XP I use Avira Anti Virus. Concerning AVG Free ending on Jan 07, actually from what I discover, you need to update from 7.1 to 7.5 to avoid it. If you update to 7.5, you can still use the free version next year

I used to be a big fan of AVG but ever since I tried Avast I have been stuck on it.

I used AVG free for awhile, but then after this post, I decided to try Avast and BitDefender. And on my laptop I use Norton. I bought the subscription before I was exposed to free virus scanners. I always thought free were bad but now I regret not doing more research.

And by the way, anyone tried ClamWin? How is it?

I haven't tried ClamWin myself but I know people that have and they say that when they uninstalled it and got a different antivirus several viruses were recognized. That's why I have never ventured to try them for myself.

I use Avast as well. Something went whacky last night as I attempted to vote and my vote got recorded as being for AVG. The default full install of Avast can be rather large, tho extremely protective for the non advanced user, but I choose to custom install it and choose nothing but the resident scanner which is all I really need.

AOL?! >80  They are right up there with MicroSquish. I have had nothing but problems with AOL, from their software to their customer dis-service.  Took me the longest time (and I still find traces) to get all the AOL software off my system.  Then I made the mistake of trying XDrive, another one I think I still have not fully remove from my system.  So, no I have not. :D

I haven't tried it myself but I have recommended it to other people. It is a simple version of the Kaspersky virus engine and just has AOL's logo on it. Kaspersky would never let AOL modify their software and affect the experience that their customers would receive so I am sure it is clean to use.

I'm really down with Avast! Anti-Virus.  I think it has such great and powerful features, and an awesome scanning engine with very high detection rates for being a free anti-virus.  I also use ZoneAlarm Free Firewall along with it.

I used to use Windows Live OneCare and the anti-virus on that sucks big time - and the customization is too elementary for me.  So it seem the free stuff is really the best stuff so far!

Although, Ryan has sold me on looking into getting either NOD32 Anti-Virus or Kaspersky.   :)

NOD32 is a truly amazing antivirus and I wish a company like Google would buy them and offer it for free. I used them for a long time but got sick of having to renew my subscription so I started using Avast.

AVG's interface is much better than what Avast has to offer but I think that Avast lets people customize more settings...and that is something that I like.
