Video Editor

Since having been introduced to the GOM Player, I use it exclusively as my media player. It has not failed to play anything and does it with amazing quality.
What I am asking here is if anyone knows of a great freeware video editor that is comparable in quality to GOM? What I specifically want to do with video files is to be able to cut out and save clips from them.
I appreciate any suggestions.

The only one that comes to mind is VirtualDub(
http://www.virtualdub.org/index
). I have heard about it before, but have never used it myself. From the list of features it looks like it does everything you want:
Reads and writes AVI2 (OpenDML) and multi-segment AVI clips.
Integrated MPEG-1 and Motion-JPEG decoders.
Remove and replace audio tracks without touching the video.
Extensive video filter set, including blur, sharpen, emboss, smooth, 3x3 convolution, flip, resize rotate, brightness/contrast, levels, deinterlace, and threshold.
Bilinear and bicubic resampling -- no blocky resizes or rotates here.
Decompress and recompress both audio and video.
Remove segments of a video clip and save the rest, without recompressing.
Adjust frame rate, decimate frames, and 3:2 pulldown removal.
Preview the results, with live audio.

Unfortunately there is a bug with Vista and how the program handles AVI files. It will probably be fixed in his next release, but have no idea when that will be.

Looks like he is just getting into the swing of things again, so I'm sure the next release will be soon.

While I never found a freeware editor yet for Vista for this task, I did find a decent program (Not Freeware) that splits AVI files. AVI files are mainly the type I work with about 98% of the time.
It is
AVI Splitter
and works perfectly on Vista. There is a short trial period, I believe it was just 7 days. Nothing was disabled during the trial. With AVI files being what I mainly work with, I decided to purchase the program. It is only $19.95, so it was well worth the price for me even though it only handles one file format.

Thanks, will definitely keep that in mind in case I ever need a program to do that. I still can't believe that I couldn't find a freeware program to do the same thing.

Hmm, that worked sort of, needed to chop out about 3 seconds off the end of a video. However I had to save it as an AVI. The video went from a 43 MB MPG format to almost 1.9 GB AVI format!!! What the heck did I do wrong?

You didn't do anything wrong...in a lot of instances the AVI file format is much larger than both MPG and WMV. I'm not sure what you're using to do your video editing, but if you can save it as a WMV file that should also be a small file size.
