Unseen Danger of Police Chases
« on: July 27, 2007, 03:09:43 PM »
Today is a very sad day for those of us in Phoenix.  In what could only be described as a freak accident two different media helicopters collided in mid-air while covering a police chase.  A total of four people died but could have been a lot worse...the helicopters crashed over a park, but very close to the high rises of Downtown Phoenix.

East Valley Tribune

The story from AZFamily.com describes what is involved when flying a helicopter and covering news, especially live news.

That is pretty insane. I've never heard of two helicopters (or planes for that matter) colliding in the air. Luckily no one from the park was hurt.

They just got the guy they were chasing.  They had almost had him when the two helicopters crashed.  He stole another construction truck then ended barricading himself in a house in the West Valley.  SWAT made entry and removed him.  That is a very large and busy park.  The last time there was a media helicopter crash in Phoenix was back in 1991 (before I was here) when a news radio helicopter crashed before a traffic report.  In that case the pilot was startled by a bottle rocket.  The investigation is going to take a long time and involves the NTSP as well as the FAA.  Also calling out a couple Helicopter Crash Specialist from Washington DC.  Just to give you an idea what is going on out there, we have 5 TV station helicopters, Phoenix PD Firebird helicopter and at least a couple news/radio helicopter/planes on in this one area, so it does get a bit crowded.

I just noticed that they changed the image on that news site as well. Now they actually have a pictured of the two helicopters coming down.

I heard they're charging the guy the police were chasing with the deaths of the helicopter people too. That seems kinda wrong. I mean yea he shouldn't have been running from the cops, but, it was an accident, he didn't cause it.

Yeah, that is definitely a sticky situation. I don't think that he should be charged with those deaths either.

There is a law about in the event of the crime (not the proper wording) if someone gets injured/killed then you can be charged with that as well. But I thought that was suppose to be like a policeman or firefighter, not TV crew. Be interesting to see how this turns out.
