Creative X-Fi Driver Update Removes DTS/AC3 Decoding
« on: July 12, 2007, 08:39:26 AM »
Thought this worth posting, been following a thread on Creative forums about it for a few days to see if anyone from Creative will say anything about it, doesn't look like they're going to.

This last patch Tuesday an update for the Creative X-Fi XP driver appeared on Windows Update. I didn't install it right away because I was having no problems or issues whatsoever and wanted to know what it changed/fixed. Other X-Fi users have figured out what it changed, it removed the DTS/AC3 decoding capability from the card.

This isn't the end of the world, theres plenty of software DTS/AC3 decoders (AC3 Filter, FFDshow) that are maybe better anyway? But, why? I'd like to know. This is supposed to be the best sound card on the market today, is why I bought it. Why remove capabilities from it? It makes no sense. Hardware DTS/AC3 decoding is a listed feature on the box too.

No point to this post really cept for me to rant bout Creative. They still haven't released X-Fi drivers for Vista that actually work like they should, they're charging people money to get certain features back in Vista, even tho they already own the card, and now they're removing listed features from the card itself, and won't even answer any of the people asking why. Who the heck is in charge over there. They're really turning away a lot of people that were pretty loyal to the Creative brand. I'm never buying a sound card from them again either.

.... end of rant.

I am guessing there must have been some stupid legal reason (like someone is threating to sue them for patent infringement if they don't remove the said feature).

I would tend to agree with Al. Sounds like it may be some goofy legal issue.

I'm sure it is a legal issue, but it is stupid for Creative to not inform their customers about what's going on. Instead they are just hoping to lay low and cross their fingers that no one notices? Come on, people who buy their cards know better than that.

Duh. They've done this before with the radio recording functionality on some of their MP3 players because the RIAA started whining about illegal stream ripping. Well I've got news for you RI *bleeping* double A: RIPPING SONGS OFF THE RADIO IS NOT ILLEGAL AS LONG AS YOU DON'T GO MASS-PRODUCE IT AND STUFF! Creative could have won this lawsuit if they were to go to court...
