OnTV: TV listings on your desktop
« on: July 10, 2007, 03:39:16 AM »
There are lots of TV listing fetchers out there, but this one is certainly different. OnTV is a GNOME applet, which means that you can put it anywhere on your GNOME panels. But enough about that. Take a look at this screenshot:

When setting up OnTV, you can choose which channels you want to display in the applet. Many countries are supported, even mine. If you're not satisfied with the default channel image, you can change it in Preferences. Here's a tip: use square images to avoid logos being stretched. If a certain TV channel doesn't have a square logo (such as BBC One), you can add borders to it using The GIMP.

One last feature you might be interested in: you can set up reminders for upcoming programs if you want. Right-click the OnTV icon, click 'Search Program', type in the name of the program you want to set a reminder for, right-click it and finally choose 'Add reminder'.

Install:
1) Enter sudo apt-get install ontv in a terminal
2) Right-click one of your GNOME panels
3) Click 'Add to panel'
4) Drag the OnTV applet to one of your panels

If you prefer full listings instead of the Now/Next-type listings that OnTV offers, check out gTVlistings.

We have a TV but it seems useless these days! The last two weeks I think it was on once.... that's it.

I'm also finding that I'm watching TV a lot less.

But it is also the off season for the good TV shows.

Yeah, but I noticed that the BBC still introduces new shows during summer. And BBC Two is about to broadcast Heroes (it's about time, VT4 - a Belgian commercial TV station - already broadcasted the entire first season! :D). The weird thing is: apparently, they've chosen to broadcast it during summer.
