OpenOffice.org.  While it may not be as powerful or as feature packed as MS Office it is nice office suite for someone on a budget (or who dislikes Microsoft >:D )

I would say Firefox too, but since someone already has, I'll go with an obscure one that everyone I show it to immediately falls in love with. A little program called Convert, its a unit converter that does conversions for just about everythingggg.

Firefox...of course...and like xpgeek, I'll go one further: Evernote which is a great notetaking tool for your desktop.

Make sure to download the Firefox extension with it. It's compatible with Firefox 2.0.

Comodo Personal Firewall

The best firewall around, and it is absolutely free too

I was looking into getting this.  Can I use along with a hardware firewall (router)?  Or should I use one or the other?

I don't like COMODO Personal Firewall. It always said things like: "This could be potentially dangerous bla bla freakin' bla". However, I know what I'm doing so I find this firewall to be annoying.

I wouldn't recommend Live Messenger by the way. It uses too much RAM; I'd advise people to stick with good ol' Windows Messenger.

My program recommendation: ISP Monitor. My Belgian ISP only lets me transfer 15GB a month, so I have to keep an eye on that. Using ISP Monitor, I can see what I've consumed already. - http://www.ispmonitor.be/

Ouch, a bandwidth limitation!?! I would die with a limit like that since I am frequently downloading Linux distributions to try out...some of which that weigh in at 4GB a piece.

Opera. I would recommend Firefox but so many people already did. And Opera has a ton of features built in that Firefox needs extensions for. It's more secure, loads pages faster (in my experience), supports BitTorrent transfers, and has widgets. I still use Fx more often though. :D

Yes, definitely Opera. I really like the new Fraud Protection in Opera 9.10 and I actually feel more secure when using it compared to Firefox.
