Fx 2 Close Tab Button Behaviour Change
« on: June 10, 2007, 03:13:50 PM »
Did Mozilla change the way the close tab buttons behave (display) with Fx 2.0.0.4?  I ask since I got this comment on my blog on the Fx 2 Tabs Close Button Tweak entry:
Quote
i did this tweak before and could see all the closebuttons even when tabs weren't in focus. but they suddenly disappeared today . I checked about:config and the value is set to 1 by default. Is it possible to get these buttons to show without rollover action?

At first I thought may be it was a theme/extension conflict.  So I changed the entry in about:config from '0' to '1' and noticed something different.  With this setting the close tab button is 'greyed' out on inactive tabs until the tab is brought active or you rollover the button.

Ohh, yea you're right. I had it set to 0 myself, now setting to 1 see the same thing. Close buttons on not active tabs are greyed out. And I actually kinda like that now.

Which value are you guys talking about in about:config?

If you are talking about "accessibility.tabfocus", then mine is set to "7".

Mine are grayed out, except when on focus and I never touched any setting.

Yeah, I think OMD is right, I'm pretty sure the close buttons are grayed-out by default.

accessibility.tabfoucs has nothing to do with this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Accessibility.tabfocus

Yes that is true but, when did this occur was it with Fx 2.0.0.4?

...was it with Fx 2.0.0.4?

I think it was earlier than that, but I'm not sure.  I never really paid attention to it.

Okay after downloading, installing and running on a fresh profile all the Firefox 2.0.0.X builds (2.0.0.0-2.0.0.3), they all behaved the same way.  I could have sworn when Fx 2.0.0.0 first came out, all the close tab buttons were red regardless if the tab was active or inactive.  The only thing I can conclude is the main theme was updated (yet changes are retroactive) at some point to change this behaviour.

Wow, I never even noticed that. It is definitely a lot nicer this way.

I would like to think that it didn't happen before 2.0.0.4, but I was obviously oblivious to the change so I'm not sure when it happened.

Given the research I did, I am baffled as to when this change occurred or how.

Mine is set to 1.  Thanks for clearing that up Al.  I have never played around in the config.

Okay Percy over at Mozilla Links says we all have a case of 'collective amnesia', apparently, this is the way it has always behaved in Fx 2.  I guess because I only have the close button on my active tab is why I never really paid attention.

He was nice enough to provide me a link to a review article he did right around time Fx 2 was released.  You can look at the screenshot there and see the inactive tab buttons are indeed grey.
