Desktop Effects
« on: June 08, 2007, 08:30:52 PM »
What the heck does Desktop Effects do besides mess everything up? >:D  I had enabled it when I first started with Ubuntu and always wondered why everything was so crappy looking and scrolling in Fx was very choppy.  I also had an annoying thick border around my windows and menus. I went through and disabled it and what a difference.  I am back to running in 1440x900 (had to drop down to 1152x864 before as everything was so crappy looking) and I can see a big difference with the font now that I did Nogg3r5 second trick.

Never used desktop effects myself. It just slows down your PC.

This could explain a lot though. I think we both have custom xorg.conf files dont we? It clearly says...

CAUTION: Feisty has something called Desktop Effects which can reconfigure your xorg.conf file automatically. If you manually edit the file Desktop Effects may not work properly. (Always make a copy of the xorg.conf file before editing. cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.A)

I think so, if that was what I had to modify to allow me to run Ubuntu in 1440x900

The desktop effects are cool at first, but you'll probably end up disabling them as they quickly become unnecessary. As Pieter said, it just slows down the computer.
