FAQ: Where's the Startup folder?
« on: May 10, 2007, 01:26:33 PM »
It took me a long time to figure out where this folder was, and it really bugged me how I had to start my IM program manually every time. I thought I'd share it with you because I think this will help out many of our (future?) forum members/visitors.

On GNOME (Ubuntu): go to System > Preferences > Sessions. Click the 'New' button and then enter the command you want to be executed on startup.

On KDE (Kubuntu): every program you don't quit when shutting down will be started when you log in. This means that if you leave GAIM/Pidgin/Kopete running in the background, it'll automatically launch when you start KDE.

Kopete is an instant messenger for the K Desktop Environment....I've never used it...If anyone here has, how does it compare to Pidgin?

I'm still a bigger fan of Pidgin myself because the interface on the newest version is very simple, and that's what I like. If you want to checkout Kopete here is the homepage:

I have used Kopete before and I didn't have any issues with it. The interface is not as clean or polished as Pidgin, but it is not bad. I think I ran Kopete on a Linspire box I had at one time.

Heres an off topic Q, since talking about Pidgin. Does anyone else get these annoying messages from the Yahoo service everytime you start Pidgin? Shows it every single time, is annoying. I've deleted the contact using WLM from my Yahoo list, never talked to em anyway, can't seem to stop this message tho every single time still.

I only use Pidgin for Google Talk, so I'm not sure about your problem. I know, it is kinda funny that I would use Pidgin when I could just use Google Talk, but I like the clean interface of Pidgin and the tabbed messenger windows.

It seems like they're working on it. I don't use the Yahoo! protocol, so I don't know how to deal with this problem.

Tabbed chat windows are awesome! The sooner all the other chat apps get them, the better

I actually haven't downloaded the spell checking yet, which I thought at first came with Pidgin.
