Forum PR
« on: May 09, 2007, 02:00:12 PM »
Is it just me, or has the forum growth recently? Less new members seem to be popping up, the first few weeks were mental, new users every second and stuff. Now though, its just the same few people who hang around here. Not that I dislike you guys, but growth is the key to success.

I would like to propose the launch of a Cybernet Forum PR Campaign.

However, I'm all out of ures. I wanna here some great ideas, obviously, drop them in this thread.

I think we should set a tone of this being the nicest forum in the world. Had you noticed that no one trolls here? Well, apart from my hating of M$ and the odd anti-apple sentiment that gets flung around. Obviously we want to try and promote the categories Ryan has already set out, although, I'm sure new categories would be created should the need arise.

At the time of writing we have 243 members, roughly 90% of those have never made a post!! There are just 13 highly active members ( those being the ones with at least Jr Member status). I think we can double this easily. 500 members and about 30 of those being active and involved would be an awesome first step.   :DO0

So, roll up with ure ideas...

Well, I've already been promoting the forum (especially the Ubuntu section) in my blog recently.  FWIW, I'm with you on the M$ as well as Apple (especially that dang QuickTime software that keeps trying to force itself on to my system each week).

Good idea Nogg3r5,

I like everyone in our group. We all show respect for one another, which is kinda rare.

I wonder if many of the people who sign-up are a little too shy to post. Because we have a small group of regulars, they may be hesitant.

Perhaps us regulars can write one or two sentences on why we like this forum and Ryan & Ashley can post it on the main blog. Sort of like a testimonials kind of thing.

That's my idea. Obviously we'd all have to get on board.

Well, let me start...

This forum is in unique in that it provides a place for us to seek help, share experiences and just have fun on a wide variety of topics.  They support the Golden Rule that there is no such thing as a stupid question (even though I think it is for me asking) and the folks here provide an honest and helpful answer.

Let me continue FX Guru's good work...
This forum is unique in that it provides a place for us to seek help without fear of being laughed at, share experiences without fear of beign hated on and just have fun on a wide variety of topics which will ALWAYS get lead off topic!  They support the Golden Rule that there is such thing as a stupid question but people tend to laugh it off and then give you a serious answer, especially if its something to do with Ubuntu and Pieter de Decker is around!

We love to promote free and open source software, but we wont hate on you for liking things that are a bit more proprietary, although we cant guarantee that you wont get a bit of an argument on your hands trying to convince people you have made the right choice!

Here's my testimonial:

"In the CyberNet forum, we've got a bunch of people who consistenly show respect for one another. We talk about everything related to tech...and every once in awhile we get off topic...but it's all good. The forum consists of a great group of people, and I look forward to everyone's opinion each day."

This is a great idea guys! We'll definitely put a post together listing the testimonials that everyone comes up with.

We're also in the process of working on a big redesign on the blog. It will have a completely new look, new features, and I think everyone will be very pleased with it. If you can think of some way that would help promote the forum more please feel free to let us know, and we'll try to get it integrated into the new design.

One thing that has been recommended before was to integrate the commenting from the blog into the forum as well. We have thought about that, and looked into it, but we think it is better to leave the two commenting systems separate for the time being.

Let us know your thoughts...and keep the testimonials coming. ;)

I too would leave the blog and forum comments separate.  I will work on a comment about the forum shortly.

Even though I do not get a lot of traffic on my personal website, I do get some, I will add a blurb and link on it to CyberNet News as well.

I do recommend the site to people that I know are tech related.

Unfortunately that can happen with a forum. Another forum I help admin has almost 250 members, and theres like, 4 or 5 people that ever make any posts at all. Beats me why. People just, forget that they joined it.

I like this forum tho, actually has become my favorite lately, because I just, feel comfortable here. I never feel judged or pressured about anything, and I like all the people here. We're like, this little band of geeks, lol, but we're all different and we all have our, areas of expertise if you will. Like one of us could recite Ubuntu  commands with his eyes closed probly, and another of us knows everything there is to know about Firefox, and its just, perfectly ok if the Windows lover doesn't know crap about Ubuntu, and I'm rambling on, I tend to do that, I love Quicktime Alternative, best format there is hands down for the highest quality movie trailers which I watch a lot of. I like that we just fool around a lot, share funny youtube videos we found, talk about mini helicopters, and our love/hate of those damn Mac ads. lol. And I like that Ryan and Ashley are so down to earth and friendly. Sometimes with forums the founders/admins kind of put themselves up on a pedestal, and don't really interact much with the members, but here they're just one of the guys, n gals, and they just help the atmosphere here be so friendly. I'm really rambling now. Anyway. This is a great forum, and I love being a member of it. I hope more people discover it and enjoy it.

Nogg3r5: Thanks for bringing this topic up because I too have been thinking the same thing. I think it's a great idea to send some publicity this way! I'd love for the forum to be beneficial to more than the people that participate regularly because the members here have a lot to offer. I've learned so much just from reading through some of these topics.

There are 243 members as of today, and really just a handful that hang out here-- which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I'd love for more people to feel welcome to join in.

Maybe all the talk of the RC Helicopters is scaring them and they don't know where to jump in? ;) J/K of course-- although I'm sure most are wondering what's up with all of the helicopter talk.
