DVD Library Software
« on: May 09, 2007, 05:38:32 PM »
Does anyone know of a good program to catalog a DVD collection in Ubuntu. I have a few options in XP but I am not sure what may be good in Linux.

Some research brought up a program called GCstar. It can used to keep track of your DVDs, CDs, books, music and even video games. Just enter the name of a movie and GCstar will try to fetch the movie information for you on the internet. It'll allow you to store information such as the director, the cast, the genre, a short description, the DVD cover and a movie clip. It looks pretty good too (screenshot)! You can install it using the Add/Remove... tool in Ubuntu. Or, if you're such a command line junkie as I am, enter sudo apt-get install gcstar in a terminal to download and install the program.

If that doesn't satisfy your needs, here's another program to manage your DVD collection: http://bumblebee.homelinux.org/ (screenshot)

Thanks a lot for the info. I have over 900 dvd's and I need some way to keep track of them. This is one of the last things I need to make a switch to Ubuntu full time. I have a dual boot set up at the moment.

I have like 15 DVD's.  O0

I normally just rent because I'll never watch them more than once.

I have almost 600 paid for DVD titles.  However, I am looking for a needy charitable organization to donate most of them to.  Will probably only keep about 75 of them.

Now if you want to include the "grey" area ones, then I would have to say I have well over 1100.

Like I posted above though, once I donate the majority of the bought ones, you will surpass me in one fell swoop.

Are you a "release Tuesday" addict who goes out to get the new movies as soon as they are released?

If you're looking for some place to donate the videos this sounds pretty cool:
http://www.operationdvd.us/index.php

I'm assuming that it isn't some scam, which is the problem with researching a lot of charities, but I figured there had to be some good service for donating videos. I figured either this or there is probably some childrens donation for kids who are in the hospital.

I used to be, especially when I worked part time at Best Buy as a Computer Technician (way before the Geek squad crap).

Thanks for the charity info, I will check it out.  I was initially thinking about donating for the troops in Iraq.
