Google Phone, is it coming or what?
« on: April 18, 2007, 08:00:56 AM »
I've just noticed that the Google Phone is yet again in the news. First sources said it was coming, then we saw two different mock-ups, then people were saying no, it's not possible-Google wouldn't enter that market- they're designing software instead for mobile phones. Now today it's back in the news and it's rumored to ship by the end of 2007.

So, what does everybody think? Does it makes sense that Google would want to enter this market? At this point, I just don't think it is.

Anyhow.. any thoughts?

I think this is going to just keep coming up because of all the iPhone hype. People are just hoping that Google has a solution as well, but I don't know if this is really a market that Google would want to hit. I could be completely wrong because Google has indeed surprised me in the past.

My opinion is that Google should stick to software and not manufacturing. Make deals with manufacturers.

I think this is the route they'll take- it makes the most sense. Software is what they're good at.

Search is what there good at, search with advertising. Making money from search with advertising is what there good at. Everything they do revolves around that. So the point of the phone will be to serve ad's on another medium. Ad-supported calling n e one?

There is no doubt that Google will get into ad-supported phone calls. They may be testing the waters with their 411 service. Even though there are no ads yet, they're surely coming in my opinion.

I think a ton of people wouldn't mind ad-supported calling if they got discounted phone services. I for one would think that it is kinda cool to see something like that, but I wonder if they would listen in on your conversation to serve relevant ads while you're talking?

How about a portable web browser with VOIP, that could be ad suported easily. Especially if it was a blackberry clone. Gmail buit in, google docs built in etc etc

Not a bad idea Nogg3r5. Do any of you use VOIP regularly? I still haven't gotten into that.

I don't really make phone calls. People tend to call me, I prefer txt/sms.

Although I have used Skype briefly for a few work projects, it worked very well

I would like to see more things brought to portable devices, especially things like the Google Docs. That would make it so easy to manage your documents and share them with others no matter where you are. I think the whole Blackberry thing is still to new and will take some time before developers see the potential that reaching a mobile audience can bring.

Too new? Is it really? Gmail has a portable interface, doesnt reader as well? They have a full suite of office apps now, so it wouldnt be too hard to make the jump, Especially if they tied it to there personalised homepages for business

Google is definitely ahead of the game when it comes to optimizing their services for mobile devices, but I was meaning other developers who see it as worthless to have a mobile version of the site. We are working on a new theme/layout for our blog and we plan on including a mobile version of it so that people can easily read it on the go.
