Ubuntu 7.04 Only for now on
« on: April 10, 2007, 03:41:15 PM »
Well typing this message on ubuntu 7.04 laptop meaning no windows at all.

Reasons:

Laptop is only used for internet and e-mail and some few pieces of work but mainly internet
Windows was taking too long to boot up
I wanted a changed
Possibly stupid on installing it fully  ::)

Overview

All hardware working as it did in windows. had install a .deb from the official ubuntu forums to get my wireless card working, rebooted and it worked first time. Boot up times are about 35 seconds amazing

Imageshack is now working

Are you running XFCE or have you tweaked GNOME? I cannot see it clearly from that small screenshot.

Just GNOME but tweaked. Uploaded on imageshack as it worked now. but put thumb nail there instead I like the tool bar at down because then i don't need any desktop icons. Also the Ubuntu restricted extras installed so the MS Fonts installed along with java, flash and codecs for mp3 etc... and all updates till last night that's all installed

I'm glad to see that you got Ubuntu up and running so well! Definitely looks like you have gotten around to tweaking it already and played with the transparency. :)

That desktop about 5 minutes top to do its so easy to change stuff also had been using the live cd for a week before i changed  just to make sure everything worked. The one thing there about 30+ updates per day as always updating

Gaim (now renamed) has 2 great features tabbed chat and spell checker like Microsoft Word they should be in windows live messenger

I have thought about using Gaim, but the only messenger client that I use is Google Talk. Of course on Linux I use Gaim, but I like Google Talk's clean interface and simplicity over other messengers like Windows Live Messenger.

I'm using Kopete, a KDE instant messenger. It looks way better than Gaim/Pidkin... :)

I use Trillian.  It is a little cluttered, and there are definitly things I don't like about it, but most of my contacts use AIM, and Trillian is years ahead of the AIM client.  I'm waiting for Astra to come out; hopefully it will clear away my grievances.

I do like Google Talk, but in some ways I think it is too simple.

I actually converted all of my friends over to Google Talk simply by giving them no other options. If they wanted to talk to me...they had to use that. :)

I've tried Trillian (and even Astra briefly) and there is just way too much that you can do. I am normally all about having lots of features, but there is something about having a nice and simple instant messenger like Google Talk available. It gets the job done without all of the flashy graphics that can get overly distracting.

Most of my friends are still too scared fo computers to think of using something different. It took an hour to convince my girlfriend that using MSN explorer wasnt as good as firefox.

I think the greatest problem is the integration with hotmail. Once my gf was using a gmail account, she stopped needing to use MSN Explorer...(Her rease for using it in the first place was "I know its less secure but that's how I check my mail"). NOw shes a firefox convert

Ahh...good old MSN Explorer. That was/is an interesting browser. I'm still amused when I see people using that because they don't realize that there is better stuff available without even having to pay for it. Some day (hopefully soon) there will be a manufacturer that is willing to sell computers either with alternate browsers already installed or with the choice to select your browser prior to purchasing the system.

The problem is, as microsoft have realised, people would rather be told what to do and what to do it with. So until there is some geurilla marketing to resolve that, people are destined to remain as IE/MSN/Hotmail users. :(
