What's your opinion on pay-per-post advertising?

I don't mind at all.
I don't mind as long as the blogger is being honest about advertised products.
I hate it, it's just another way to cloak ads.

Your opinion on pay-per-post advertising
« on: April 01, 2007, 06:08:45 AM »
What's your opinion on pay-per-post advertising? Personally, I don't mind as long as the blogger is honest about the product and as long as he labels these posts as 'sponsored'. It's a win-win situation. Bloggers could write about products they like (like they usually do) and even get paid for it. Of course, many people will abuse this. But if you're honest and if you can say 'no' to money from companies whos products you don't like, this could really work.

I don't mind it, but I think too many bloggers are influenced by the money. I have seen plenty of articles that disclose the sponsorship of the post, but I even saw one that said "it’s something I would have never covered on my own". I understand that the money is awfully enticing, but don't let that influence your content.

If it was something you were going to write about anyways, and you are getting paid then that is the best solution. I agree with you though pdedecker, I just want the reviews to be honest.

We've never done a sponsored post on our site, but we have done giveaways for software that we personally tried out before contacting the company for free licenses. That is the closest we have come to a sponsored post though.

That's not even close to a sponsored post. Sure, the "advertiser" gets some attention, but they didn't ask for it in the first place. If you'd call that an ad, CyberNet would have advertised - lets's say - Calgoo a couple of times. That's not the case...

This is just another one of these win-win situations: readers can win free software, bloggers get more traffic (and more ad revenue in some cases) and publishers get attention. It's great how these people can work together and all benefit from it.

Thanks! We have received some criticism about the software that we giveaway because some people don't think we honestly review the software. In reality we actually test the software and prepare reviews before we even request free licenses, and we tell the developers that in the emails we send them. If they decide to give us free licenses it is just kinda an added bonus that is always a lot of fun.

By the way, if you have any commercial software that you would like to see a giveaway for let us know. We'll check it out and if we agree that the software is good we'll see if we can get some free licenses to give away on the site.

Actually, I don't have any commercial software on my wishlist as I can get everything I need for free. The open-source community is growing every day, and I can't think of anything I want that they don't have. Of course that doesn't mean that there's no commercial software out there that might interest me.
