Registry/Hard Drive Cleaner
« on: May 12, 2007, 07:05:28 PM »
Does anyone know of a good registry/hard drive cleaner that will search for crap left behind by a poor uninstall?

I am getting the damn dreaded "Com Surrogate Has Stopped Working" error anytime I even hover over a .avi file.  I had uninstalled Divx, which was the cause of these issues in the beta and RC versions of Vista.  However, I did search the registry and manually deleted any key referencing Dixv.  I still get the damn error though.

Tried just using CCleaner ( http://www.ccleaner.com ) ? It has a built in registry cleaner, and is free. And is the only one I've seen so far absolutely certified compatible for Vista. I use that, and a second stronger registry cleaner too on XP, but, said second one I use finds many, many manyyyy more results for repair on Vista then I think it should, and I don't trust it to use it fully.

Thanks I will check it out.  I tried Tweaknow Registry cleaner pro and it did find a lot of registry errors.  I had it clean them up, however, I still get the Com Surrogate Error when running a .avi file, but not when just hovering over it so far.

If it were XP, theres dozens of great registry cleaners to choose from. But on Vista, which has a lot more registry keys, a whole slew of new ones that don't even exist on XP, etc etc etc, I'd just, ehh I'd be pretty careful if its not certified compatible for it.

I also recommend CCleaner. I've been using it for awhile.

I was expecting this answer from you!  ::)

I would have to have a 2nd computer with it installed on to try out.  However, I really do not see how I could switch from Windows.

Where there's a will theres a way. WHen I was confined to windows, I used RegScrubXP. It did a grand job

I believe the registry cleaner I used, worked just fine as it found a bunch of errors and fixed them.  I still get the damn "Com Surrogate Stopped Working" error when playing .avi files though.  I need to figure out how to fix that!

Maybe this will help Com Error Fix. Contains several possible solutions to this specific error. Good Luck!

Yeah, I don't think a registry cleaner is going to fix your problem. I think you'll have to use the solution mentioned in the article spock1982 linked to, or this might help as well:

Actually it is interesting that this came out as I just found that same article last night.  I had forgotten all about Nero causing problems.  I believe it all started after installing Nero.  I got the latest and updated Nero, which interestingly, due to the age of mine, which was just after Vista released, had to be uninstalled first.  I have not yet noticed the errors, but I have yet to run an avi, so will see later.
