Windows Vista Search But On GNOME
« on: March 16, 2007, 11:21:43 AM »

Current Features

    * Front-end to both the Beagle & Tracker desktop search engines.
    * Has actions (configurable through Desktop files), which speed up common tasks.
    * Has in-built, user-configurable, filters which work in the the entry box, so typing 'pics:london' will only bring up pictures.
    * Super-fast application searching through an in-built list of applications.
    * Colours can be customised to your taste.
    * Lives in the system-tray, but can be called by a global key stroke. Default is Ctrl+Alt+a, but you can change it to anything you like!
    * Written in C for minimal impact on your system, but maximum speed!

Planned Features

    * Connect 'Places' to HAL, so automatically shows mounted devices.
    * When you press the global keystroke, if Affinity shown but is not 'active' raise the window, instead of hiding it.
    * Metabar widget, which will provide more details about the currently selected search result & an 'Actions' widget which provides more ways to manipulate the result.
    * Support for Tasks & Calender events. Plus better support for bookmarks.
    * Create results view depending on the current filter. For instance, using the image filter could show a icon view, rather than tree view, and have larger icons.
    * Add a 'spinner' to allow the user to see when the search has finished.

That looks really awesome!..I really like Beagle.

Unfortunately I'm using KDE now instead of GNOME.

Oftentimes, programs will work on both...Maybe I'll give it a try.

That is super slick! I looked at a few of the other screenshots from the blog and it looks amazing with the filters. I do wish that Vista had filters that could be used so that it would know when it didn't have to search all of my files and such. I can tell it not to search files in the settings, but sometimes I want it to.

Vista's best feature, in my opinion, is the integrated search placed all over the system. Wherever you go there is some sort of search feature that makes using the operating system even easier. If Linux can start doing the same thing I am confident that they can gain a lot more ground!

Too bad it's not made for KDE. My GNOME desktop crashes when loading, so I can't use it... :(
