The big Places UI changes have started to land in the bookmarks manager in the latest nightlies. In line with the plan to hold major UI changes for M9, the new bookmarks manager seems to have been held back until after Alpha 8 had branched. Considering that, so far, it's only the bookmarks part (not history/downloads), and the visual refresh hasn't landed, the new 'Places Organiser' seems pretty close to the i5 mockup. Works quite well, too...

I would've posted this in the comments, but it's technically about trunk not the Alpha 8 branch, so I didn't like to derail the thread.

Thanks for the heads up Oropher. I'm really glad that they ditched the menu bar, I wonder when they are going to get the history and stuff in there though?

Here's a quick screenshot I snapped for anyone wanting to see what it looks like:

Beta 1 sometime next week probly. Couple sites already falsely posted todays nightly as it. But it is close, as Mozillazine forums says Firefox 3 Beta 1 - Testday, Friday 9. November.

I downloaded todays nightly anyway out of boredom, has official branding too. Been several months since I've played with a trunk/nightly. Am pretty impressed. Full page zoom actually working now, bout time Firefox got it too. Pretty snappy and fast too, wow Google Reader seems wayy faster for me now.

They actually just got the full page zoom implemented a few days ago.

I did notice all of the postings about Beta 1 coming up sometime soon, but given that the test day isn't until Friday I thought I would hold off on writing about it.

A lot. Especially given the 8 Alphas.

I've never noticed that before. I have Avast! installed and I saw that as well, and I'm assuming it is integrating with that somehow. It can't be using Google because you would have to approve some sort of authorization in order for them to do that.

I'm using AVG. I wonder if it is using on system scanner, somehow I don't think so. Thats actually pretty cool tho. Will help with people downloading so many virus's.

More changes in the latest nightly - the Bookmarks Sidebar and Places Organiser are updated so you can (finally) access unfiled bookmarks! Tags are listed in the Places Organizer, so now you can edit, remove and easily view by tag. History is in there too, but it's not very usable yet - it just lists all your pages, 180 days worth by default, and the only sort options are unsorted (order visited), A-Z and Z-A. But I'm sure more practical sorting options will soon follow.

It uses whatever your default AV is.

I did see the Unfiled Bookmarks folder in the sidebar, which is nice because I'm going to start using that for my junk folder. I also noticed that they took out the section for the "website preview" in the Places Organizer. I wonder if that idea was kicked out the door?

The Preview pane in the Places Organizer has been taken out pending a performance review. If they can find a way to do it without causing a major slowdown, it'll be back.

Ahh, that makes sense. I was wondering how they were going to efficiently store previews of all the user's bookmarks anyway.
