I figured out why you've never noticed the download manager doing virus scanning on Firefox 3.0. Its because you've been using Avast. I switched back to Avast, and at first didn't think it was even doing it anymore, but I downloaded a few files and watched the download manager closely, it is still doing it, its just doing it so fast that you can barely notice it. When I was using AVG, the virus scan took a definite 2 seconds or so. So Avast is doing a MUCH faster scan when Firefox initiates its scan.

That is a good point, and I haven't used AVG in quite awhile so I didn't realize that. I normally don't watch the download manager all that closely either, so that was probably half the issue. I think that after it is done downloading it should have a message that says something like "Download Completed & Scanned for Viruses"

The first versions of the new WinXP and Mac themes have landed. Vista should be coming soon.

Can't wait to see the Vista theme land. Right now the XP theme is in Vista, and it's quite awkward, but I don't suppose it would be all that much better on XP.

I'm still iffy on the 'unified' back and forward buttons. I'm going to give it a chance though, before I start to complain.

Some great Firefox 3 news today.

First off, to update on my last post bout 3, the virus scanning can be disabled now in about:config, in official Beta 3 already too. browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone to false.

And for the really good news, check this out.

I've been using/playing with Firefox custom optimized builds for years, builds specially optimized for SSE and SSE2 and stuff like that, a custom builder named Tete makes the fastest ones optimizing with PGO, and this new one from Ted smokes em all.

Quote
WOW!! This is the fastest build I have ever tried. Excellent!
Quote
seconded
this is insane
JS tests are so quick i thought it was erroring and thats compared to opera
The overall speed seen here is very similar to tete's latest beta 3 build but this is faster still!
Quote
Wow. Same here, fastest build I've ever tried, and I've tried/played with a bunch. Hope to see these kept coming.
Quote
I've just tested this build on an older PC and its still a lot faster. Infact its nearly twice as fast than opera on the JS tests. I haven't done any other tests yet.
So if PGO has this much difference, why wouldn't mozilla build firefox with PGO as default?
Quote
Good, then you won't mind when we turn this on by default for nightlies!
Our plan is to make the official builds this way. I just checked in the build config changes from that bug, so we're almost ready to turn it on.
I do suspect most of what you're seeing are the effects of recent JS changes, the PGO just helps it out and makes everything a bit faster.

Goddamn this build is fast. This is really excellent news. Firefox 3 is going to smoke Opera, and do it for everyone too, not just us Firefox geeks that like to use third party optimized builds.

I'm so incredibly happy that they are going to be rolling that out into the nightly builds. I tested it out and it is indeed faster, but I wonder how long it will be before it finds its way into the nightlies.

Ryan, I think it is already in the latest nightly as of these last one. So many are talking about it in the nightly build thread and I see a difference too, is why I think so. But I could be wrong.

New option added in todays nightly that I like.

#419609 [Firefox:General]-add hidden pref to disable site-specific zoom [All]

The pref name is browser.zoom.siteSpecific, default true.

I like that. I actually don't like how zooming one page from a site auto zooms every other page from same domain too.

Yea xpgeek, I was wrong it wasn't already in the builds. There was other speed improvements that had me fooled into thinking it was the PGO speed boost. Fx 3 is getting better and better. If anyone complains that 3 isn't much of an improvement like they did with 2 then they are just plain Fx bashers because it's packed with a ton of great things.
