And they didn't mention anything in today's Gecko 1.9 status meeting either.

I blogged about this today: Gecko 1.9 & Animated PNGs

There isn't going to be anything super noticeable since the last alpha...just a lot of bug fixes. Places should be in by Alpha 4 though.

The estimated date was the middle of March, and it has been decently stable lately so I would guess that an Alpha will be coming soon.

I thought Fx 3 was going to have MNG support...but they make it sound like APNG is more efficient, so I guess it's for the best.

Also, with all of the features Mozilla has planned for Fx 3, how many Alphas do you think they will release (keeping in mind that it is Mozilla's policy not to add any new features once the product has reached the Beta stage)?

So this is purely speculation, but I would guess 5 alphas. They still have a lot of things they would like to get into Firefox 3 that they haven't even begun work on. Alpha releases are supposed to be every 6 weeks and Alpha 3 is expected any day now, so that would give Mozilla 3 months to get done what they need to. That sounds about right for a release that is planned for later this year (I think sometime in the fall).

The APNG support is much better in the latest nightlies compared to Alpha 3. The examples of APNG's in our post only work in nightlies and not in Alpha 3. So I wish they would have waited a few more days to pull out an alpha release so that it was a little more exciting...oh well.

More news on the Firefox 3 front.  This latest installment makes it seem like so many of the features we wanted and were teased with won't make it into the final release, in favor of just Places.  However, as I posted in the comments:

Quote
This list does make it seem like Firefox 3 won?t feature any more improvements other than Places and rendering enhancements. While those are definitely important, this does sound a little disappointing, especially since they asked for so much input from users on new feature ideas. However, I don?t ever recall hearing about the discontinuous selection feature in the latest nightly, so is it possible that Mozilla still plans to release some of the planned/theoretical features by rolling them out slowly and unannounced in the nightlies?

Any opinions?

PS - I would like to say that I am very pleased with the discontinuous selection feature.  It seems very useful, a convenience that one day will make me wonder how I lived without it.

I'm also very happy with the discontinuous selection feature. I love to take notes when I read...this will definitely speed up the process...can't wait!

They just need to fix a keyboard shortcut problem with the discontinuous selection feature. Ctrl and click is also a shortcut for table selection or something, which makes the discontinuous selection feature not work on most sites I've tried it on.

Yes, the Ctrl key is currently mapped to table selection as well which is definitely a problem especially when trying to select across large areas. Once they fine tune it I'm sure it will be much better.

I think Mozilla will still be adding in some new features here and there, and another one that I remember seeing that should be coming is the option to save a website as an image. Places will definitely be the center of attention, but they will be throwing in some other things here and there I'm sure.

For anyone who is interested, or can't wait for Firefox 3.0, there is an extension that allows you to save a website as an image:
