*gasp* An Opera post!
« on: March 02, 2007, 12:35:10 PM »
I see too many Firefox posts in this section of the forum, so how about an Opera post to balance that!  8) (Firefox still rules!! <3)

I don't know how many of you know, but Opera has built in BitTorrent technology which works very well. Many of you probably knew that, but did you also know Opera has a built in IRC client (like ChatZilla for Firefox) and it can fetch e-mails like a desktop e-mail client such as Thunderbird or Outlook. I only recently found out about these last 2 things so I thought I would share.

Opera really does have nearly everything, and it is close to being my favorite browser. There are just some extensions that extend Firefox so well to do things that no other browser has done before. Opera, however, is the most efficient browser that I have ever used in terms of memory management. I have never seen a single memory leak in it maxing out around 80MB of RAM. Now that's impressive!

Supposedly the weekly build of Opera this week should include a feature that has never been seen before in a browser, so I am really looking forward to seeing what they offer.

Good browser but if am downloading torrents i use uTorrent as only uses 176kb of RAM when downloading, don't need a IRC really. Firefox is still Number #1 but will download latest nightly when the "new" feature is out

The new feature is out.

See here : Opera unveils "Speed Dial"

Seems useful, but not all that groundbreaking.

I like Opera as well, but just ehh, I'm so much more used to Firefox and know everything there is to know about customizing it and tweaking it. Opera definitely a close second tho in my book.

I'm just going to echo here:

Behind Firefox, Opera is a close second.

The extensions in Firefox are what set it apart for me. Plenty of times, while using Opera, and I use it quite often, I think to myself: "Man, if only I were able to ___."

With Firefox, there's almost always an extension to complete that sentence.

Opera is good. It just doesnt work for me. I prefer to use a torrent client for torrents and a web browser for surfing. Its just a matter of preference. I also like the way firefox feels compared to opera. Operas feels big, I believe its actually smaller in file size, but it feels big, where firefox is like a lightweight...thing.

My favourite thing about opera is the built in mail client, I used it for a long time before I fell for Firefox and Gmail. Its a rheeeeeeallly good mail client, one of my favourite, and I hate mail clients!

I have no idea how I missed the post about the weekly build. Man, I'm losing my touch. :)

Although Firefox is unstable, slow and crashes when I load a Flash applet I wouldn't want to switch to Opera. I'd miss all my extensions.

Amazing what a difference extensions can make. :) How many other pieces of software can you say that you use even though it is slow, unstable, and crashes...go on, I know someone is going to say Windows. ;)

Uh OS X. Unfortunately, the third party software for that can be flaky at best. As for OS X Server, well, half the features just plain dont work.

In the end, it's open source software that works best. :)

OS X is based on open source software. The point I was trying to make is that all software is unreliable.

Windows.

Just thought I'd say it.

Of course all software is unreliable.  Humans make it, and we are as far from reliability and perfection as you can get.

BTW, I don't see Opera and Firefox as being in direct competition, because Opera is about the all-inclusive thing while Firefox is about being feature-selective yet extensible.  Sea Monkey is more Opera-like than Firefox.  I don't need all of Opera's features, yet need some Firefox extensions, so I say Firefox FTW.
