The Forum After One Week
« on: December 01, 2006, 11:50:06 AM »
I have to say that I am very impressed with how well this forum is going since it has been alive and kicking for just over one week. We currently have 42 members (which is great since you don't have to register to post), 274 posts, and 28 different topics! I didn't expect to see such a large number of posts initially but I am undoubtedly happy with everyone's participation.

I am actually pretty new to the whole forum thing myself so I thought I would point a few things out that some people may not have realized.
  • When entering in a URL it is formatted a little different for a forum than HTML. I honestly had to look it up in the Help section to figure out how to do this. If you just paste an URL into the post it should automatically hyperlink just fine but here is a screenshot of the best way to do it:

  • Unlike the blog, you can change the time that appears so that it matches your timezone by going to Profile->Look and Layout Preferences->Time Offset:

  • Unfortunately we don't allow users to upload images to the forum because of bandwidth and hard drive space considerations but that shouldn't stop you from posting images. Most forums that I have been to always show a thumbnail of the image and if you want to view the full-size you'll have to register. I hate that but many of them have to do it otherwise their bandwidth will quickly get eaten up. There are all kinds of great photo hosting services that you can use to post your photos so that there is a full-size image right inside the post. I have seen people using ImageShack, Photobucket, and Flickr but my personal favorite is AllYouCanUpload. They have no restrictions on bandwidth or image size and like some of those other sites they will even give you the necessary code to post a thumbnail or the original image into a forum.

  • Sometimes it is fun to see the stats and you are free to view all of the stats that are available to me. They include things like how many members there, most posted on topics, most viewed topics, and more. At the bottom of the homepage you should see a "More Stats" link or you can just click here. Some of the posts have already received more than 500 views which is very impressive!

If you are wondering how to do something on here just checkout the Help section. I have had to refer to that more times than I care to admit.  ;D

I really appreciate all of the work that everyone has been putting into the forum and it is fun to see it grow. As it continues to get bigger I'll probably be needing some moderators to help me out so I'll be watching for people who are active here.

I'm glad that your glad that the forum is a bit of a hit Ryan. I happen to quite like it.
I've been looking for a forum to dedicate some time to for a while, but had been unable to find one where I didn't feel like an outsider. I feel right at home here.

The stat's page you mentioned is awesome, I'm a bit of a stat monkey so ill be looking at that a lot!

Happy 1-week birthday forum!! :)

I'm happy the forum is popular. It's great to see people posting and constantly exchanging ideas, helping others, and sharing information. It might not be a big forum (just yet) but it's still very fun to post in it and be a part of!

I'm really enjoying this forum as well. Lots of good stuff so far.

Ryan, I like how you post stuff here that you may not necessarily post to your blog. The tips are great. :)

I come across a lot of news in a days time (I normally filter through over 30,000 RSS items a day) and some of it is really interesting, but there isn't enough to write a whole article about. Those things are what fits in here perfectly which is why I love the forum so much.

Only complaint from my side is about the emoticons,
it doesn't look good compared what we have in the blog.

Thanks!
