As a middle school science teacher I am looking for a program that will organize my ever-expanding information resources.  Specifically, I would like to find a program that would automatically search my documents, interactive lessons, internet bookmarked sites, etc. for commonalities.  I realize that I have created a "sea of information" and want to find the technology to organize it for me (without having to go through the time/effort of re-organizing it on a new program).  Is there anything that exists that will take all this varied information and use "key" words and organize into files for me?  I have looked at the "FilePro" software, but I am unsure that it will fit my needs.  Thank you for you input.

Well, I guess there are two ways that you could go about organizing your files. You could find documents that match a certain term with a Desktop Search by using either the default search in Windows Vista or Google Desktop Search. Then you could place those files in a folder. It might take a while though, depending on how many categories that you are organizing your files in to. Also, there is another type of software that could do this automatically for you. I've never used that type of software before though.
(from Wikipedia)
Quote
Desktop Organizer software applications are applications that automatically create useful organizational structures from desktop content from heterogeneous types of content including email, files, contacts, companies, RSS news feeds, photos, music, and chat sessions. The organization is based on a combination of automated scanning of metadata similar to data mining and manual tagging of content. The metadata stored in applications is correlated based on a structure for the data type handled by the organizer tool. For example the email address of a sender of an email allows the email to be filed in a virtual folder for the author and company the author works for or a music file is filed by the musician and album label. The resulting visualization simplifies use of desktop content to navigate, search, and use related information stored on the desktop computer. The data in desktop organizer tools is normally stored in a database rather than the computer's file system in order to produce virtual folders where the same item can appear in multiple folders to the user based on its relationship to the folder.

I would have suggested searching for this type of software on SourceForge.net, but it is currently down for maintenance. Whenever it comes back online, that might be a good place to start.

That sounds like a lot of information that you want to index, and I tried searching for a program but didn't find anything overly complex that would do this for you.

Hi everybody, As you may have noticed, I am new to this forum but it looks to be very entertaining as well as helpful ;)  I hope to be able to contribute to it a little.

I am surprised that you do not have an intro section, is this deliberate?..........or have I just missed it? B| One other thing that I am used to is the country you live in being stated within the threads. I checked the profiles of a couple of members and they were USA based, Are the majority American? It helps to know as I am from the UK and the language I use can at times be just a tad misleading but I can try to adapt if I know that the majority are from the USA ;D O0

As you say over the pond, have a nice day :D

Welcome Busman!  You will do just fine here.  While I believe the majority of the users here are from the USA, we have a few from your side of the pond.  We will have no problem understanding you, and if we do, we will call you on it.  O0

Hi Busman! I think there's a pretty even mix of US based people and those from other countries. Either way, you'll fit right in. :) Also, you made a great point- I think we may need to consider adding an "introduction" thread so that everybody can introduce themselves. Feel free to just introduce yourself here for now...

Welcome Busman! I guess we don't really have an intro section, but this is kind of close to it. I'm not really sure what would be good to put in an intro section.

We'll definitely have no problem understanding...I can already tell that your English is very good! I can't wait to hear more from you, and feel free to jump into any of the conversations.
