I would like to welcome everyone to the new CyberNet forums! This was started because there are just some things we don't write about on CyberNet News that people would like to discuss. This allows everyone to take discussions even further!

Several people have emailed me requesting the start of a forum which is what sparked me to set one up. This will now be the preferred method for people to contact me requesting help on anything. I get a surprising amount of emails and it is often people asking "what kind of software will do [insert feature here]" and this way everyone will be able to learn from the question.

I have integrated several different categories but if there is something that you still want added just let me know. Also, as of right now I have the forum setup so that guests can post without the need to register. Some people just hate registering on sites so I thought this might be a good solution. It does require you to enter in a captcha so that should help prevent spammers.

Why would you register then? If you are a registered user all of the advertisements will be removed. I think that will be enough motivation for people to register.

So...if you hear some breaking news or just found a cool piece of software post it here!

Writing a simple script to import the old blog entries and comments as threads could be very useful here - it would allow easier browsing and discussion of old topics.

I've never seen this board software before either, what made you plumb for it?

One feature I really do like is the 'show unread posts since last visit'.   Seems to be a really nice platform, will take a little getting use to but nice nonetheless...

I could write something to import all of the blog posts but I think that may add a lot of clutter to the forum. I plan on adding an advanced searching feature to the site as well so that people will be able to search other spots like the comments. Hopefully I can get that up soon as well.

Max actually emailed me last night saying that I should start a forum. That is kinda what put me over the edge because I think he was the 5th person in the last month that requested the feature. So I started looking around and was originally going to use the BBPress blogging software which integrates nicely with WordPress. However, it is nothing like a real forum experience so I decided to look else where. I was emailing back and forth with Max asking for recommendations and I stumbled upon another forum that used this software. I asked him if he liked it and he said that he had used it before and it is pretty nice. Best of all it is free unlike some of the other forum software like vBulletin (not to mention the cool plug-ins and themes people create for this software).

Setup took me less than 5 minutes but installing some of the plug-ins (which the software refers to as packages or modifications) was a little trickier because of some permission problems it was having on our server. I really like it though and would highly recommend the software to anyone.

Also, when you are commenting the Preview function rocks! It uses AJAX so the page doesn't even have to reload!

And I am almost positive that it is keeping track of your sessions on our server...so you can access the forum from anywhere and it will still know what posts you haven't read.

Well I know it kept track when I went switched from Flock into Firefox.  I just keep Flock for news reading.

Definitely a great addition.  I have a good feeling about this forum.  The site attracts a good crowd and that should carry over into the forums.  Good job as usual, Ryan.
