uninstalling vista
« on: January 04, 2007, 04:53:42 PM »
Since I don't really use Vista I would like go ahead and uninstall it.  I have it on a partition on my hard drive, from what I have read by googleing is that I will have problems with boot loader that vista uses.  I installed vista so long ago that I am not really sure where the vista boot loader got installed.  When I power on my puter it boots into XP, if I want to switch to vista I use PQboot a program that came with norton partition magic.  If I restart my puter, from vista then vista reloads.

This makes me wonder if the vista boot loader is installed on the vista partition, and that if I just reformatted that partition all would be well.  Does this sound logical or I am just really wishing for an easy way out that doesn't exist?

link about uninstall

I figure even if I have problems with the vista boot loader I should be able to just use my xp install disc and do a fixmbr and then merge the partitions.  Before I start and regret it later, any thoughts out there?

thanks

I have done this several times actually and sometimes the "fixmbr" command works and sometimes it doesn't. Just deleting the partition would not get rid of the Vista Boot Loader because the boot loader is stored on the main drive, which should be the "C:" drive. Just make sure you backup any important data because I know at least one of the times trying to get rid of Vista on a partition corrupted my whole hard drive and I had to format it, luckily I was prepared for that to happen though.

Thanks for the info, I was able to successfully delete my Vista partition without having to reload XP.  I had no problems with the boot record.

thanks

Does n e one else find it amusing that this post exists but not one on installing Vista. Kinda shows Microsoft in a bad light.

Actually that could also be because installing Vista is so easy. There are far less options to confuse users and there isn't the DOS-like interface anymore that's hard to navigate. Microsoft really stepped up their game when creating the installation process this time around...and I give them props for that.  O0

Not to mention that it installs much quicker too.
