How To: Remotely Connect to a Lan PC
« on: January 03, 2007, 07:36:27 PM »
i dont know why I'm writing this but i thought i should ........

basically this feature is for people who want to log into there pc's on there home network......(eg for a server pc or a media pc or a folding pc etc...)

for this to actually work you should know your names of the pc you are accessing mine are named accordingly

computer1
computer2
computer3
computer4
computer5

you need to know the domain as well and have permission (try to keep on the same domain "MSHOME" or create your own and stay on that as its alot more easier)

you can edit and create all of this in

My Computer > Right click > Properties > Computer Name

and make sure your firewall accepts the 'mstsc' or  'RDC' or 'Remote Desktop Connection' in inbound and outbound.......

as well as this you need to know your login name and password (this dosnt work if you dont have a password) for this i use Tweak UI as it can auto load you in .....

hint: it may be a good idea also to give them static lan IP's (if you do this make sure your network ports are open on your firewall)

Step 1:
to start you need to access the program itself in which you

Start > Run > (type the words in the run tab box) 'mstsc'

Step 2:
you are then presented with a window with the first tab "general"

this is where you enter the computers name, that you will log into
then user name and password , domain simple pimple stuff......

Hint: you may want to save your password.....for future purposes......

Step 3:
Customizing the way you log in, this is basically the other tabs that are on the list, which are
'Display'
'Local Resources'
'Programs'
'Experience'

(with all of these I'm assuming people are using either wireless B and above and 10mbps and above over cable)

If you select 'Display' and put "Colours" to "24 Bit"

Than select 'Local Resources' these defaults should be fine for general use however if you want to be more specific GO NUTS!

The 'Programs' tab to me isn't useful however you may find it more useful eg start Firefox......(all you do is define the location of the exe)

The last but by far the most useful 'Experience' this tab you should select "Lan 10mbps or higher"

Step 4:
You may want to save this so you dont want to repeat all of these again, to do this just go to the 'General' tab and click save, then select your destination point

(me personally i have made an area in my "All Programs" to access them all)

Step 5:
Click connect

and let it load..........

you actually get a status bar at the top which gives you the option to close the program down minimize or shrink window(however the screen shot obviously dosnt show)

Hint: when you close this or go through the normal Start > Turn of computer , you will notice a disconnect only however if you want to poweroff your pc there is another program which you can use called Poweroff in which turns your pc off and does a whole variety of other things.........

theres my first guide  hope you enjoy and hope it helps =) any corrections would be a help.........
