The Player is free which can only open existing VMware images of operating systems. The Workstation, which is not free, is what you need to do a fresh install of an operating system such as Windows. At least that is how I have always known it to be.

Hmm. I thought Workstation was free as well. It must have been at some point, cos I have a load of serial numbers for it. I wouldn't have paid for them.

There are ways to do a fresh install with the player, its just not as easy as with the Workstation version

There's always alternatives to getting a load of serial numbers.

VMware Server and VMware Player are offered for free...not VMware Workstation...

I just burned the ISO image of the new Ubuntu 6.10 to CD so I'll be installing it soon too!  It looks like there's a lot of documentation, help, and tutorials out there on how to use Ubuntu Linux so that's good for me!

The forums and wiki are uber-useful, pretty much everything u could ever want is there!

Yeah, I would say that the forums are the most useful for Ubuntu. I just wish I could run it on my primary laptop but it doesn't support the fans...so it gets way too hot.

Kinda sucks. It doesn't support the network card on my pc, I haven't found n e other network cards that aren't supported!!

Huh, just looked at the homepage for it and it really looks interesting. I think Ubuntu is easy to get going as it is...but they keep finding ways to make it easier. I'm pretty impressed.
