You're definitely right spock. Bill Gates just announced at WinHEC today that almost 100% of desktops and servers are capable of running a 64-bit operating system, and by next year almost 100% of laptops will be capable as well. Once all computers being sold are 64-bit compatible I think there will be more of an initiative taken by the computer industry to make drivers and applications work with the 64-bit operating systems.

I bought a 64 bit AMD Athlon back in 2004 right after they became available so that I could get on the 64 bit bandwagon. What a disappointment! The MoBo did not even come with 64 bit drivers even though it had 64 bit written all over the box. Guess that what I get for needing the newest and fastest.

I have a 64 bit processor, dual core Pentium D, but I still use a 32bit os, cause 64bit support just aint there yet with software and drivers.

Success!  I download the alternate version as was able to get it successfully installed.  Using it as I type.  The only minor problem so far is it does not support  1440x900 resolution but I am using 1280x960 which is good enough.

You should find, that if you install it from the cd, use the restrictedd drivers, then reboot, that it starts working. If not, you need to reconfigure the X server. I would leave instructions, but im away for the weekend, im sure pieter will be able to help ya out!

One other more annoying problem I can't get it to access all my hard drives.  It allows me to the drive that has Ubuntu installed and Windows XP drive but not the drive that has all my data.  It shows up in the file browser but go there.

I believe that you will need to set up a mount point  for that drive. Also is it NTSF?

Back in Windows at the moment, last time I tired to start Ubuntu it failed..may have been a fluke.

Yes, that drive's file system is NTSF.

Okay, now I cain't get Ubuntu to come up :(

When I select the start option in the boot-up menu it says Starting Up and nothing happens (prior my monitor would give me an error about display not supported until Ubuntu started) but now nada.

I tried recovering an it seems to stall after 'Enabling IO-APIC IRQs'

Suggestions?  This has been a much more difficult experience than I was expecting.  :'(

I'm assuming that you can't even get it to show the boot process? That's where it shows line by line what it is going through and loading. That way you can see if it is failing somewhere.

From the sounds of it though you're not even getting that far?

The only thing where it showed line by line was when trying the recovery and it got as far as...

'Enabling IO-APIC IRQs'

On normal boot-up it just says Starting Up...

That is kinda what I am concluding.  I'll just wipe the drive and start over.  Hadn't done much anyway.

Thanks to a response to my blog post, I am back in!  I just had to go into BIOS and disable APIC.  Now, if I can get all my drives to show up and be able to run at 1440x900, I really be happy.

Al, To get some awesome screen resolution try these...

Ubuntu Restricted Drivers Manager -> Make sure your using these, then restart the computer and try changing the screen resolution again.

if that doesnt work, try...

Reconfiguring X-Server. X11 or X.org is the piece of software that creates what you see on screen, or at least thats how I understand it.  Reconfiguring it worked for me, but its tough. So read every screen carefully. There's one point where it asks you want screen resolutions you want, try adding the res u want to the list.

Let me know how it goes!
