Okay I'll recycle an old thread instead of starting a whole new one.  I have not had much success downloading the ISO.  I thought it download successfully and I had put it on a CD but when I tried to boot from the CD I got a failure message and it proceeded to boot from the hard drive.  Now, I am not sure if that message meant it just couldn't boot from the CD-Drive or the ISO on the CD was bad.  I am looking at ordering a CD but I see it can take up to 10 weeks!  Anyone have any other suggestions?

You need to make sure that your computer is set to boot from your CD first, rather than your hard drive.

You can do this by adjusting the boot sequence in your BIOS.

If you've already done this, then I don't know what the problem could be.

When put the CD in - select Check CD for defects then tell you if the CD haves any problems if so it will say. Also burn at 1x -4x

Okay, I had to setup the BIOS to only boot from the CD and nothing else to get it to to boot.  I was able to boot using the OEM Windows XP CD.  So I tried again with the Ubuntu CD I made and it failed (then proceeded to boot from the HD which I thought was interesting since I had not specified it could boot from the HD).  So I'll try again to burn but at a slower speed.

Thanks to PDecker, I downloaded and used CDBurnerXP Pro and was able to burn the ISO on to a CD.  So, I am little further ahead now...I can boot from the CD and I get the Ubuntu Startup Screen.  However when I make a selection such as install or check cd for defects it loads/initializes a couple files then goes to a blank black screen with the cursor flashing in the upper left corner.  Nothing happens after this point.  So, any ideas what I am doing wrong.  Note: if I select the option but from hard drive then I can at least get into Windows.

It really sounds like you may still have a bad burn on that CD.

On the Ubuntu forum they recommended I download the alternative. I tried earlier but it ended up download incomplete.  I'll try again in a few days, I am in no hurry right now.

It definitely sounds like there was an error in your download, so I would guess that you would have to redownload it. You could get one of the MD5 apps listed here:
http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/12/05/cybernotes-calculating-md5-sha-1-and-crc-hash-values/

to see if it matches the Ubuntu MD5 hash:

For future referrnce. If you use firefox, dont install 64-bit ubuntu. There are no Flash or java plugins for that version

I think that 64-bit operating systems are still a little behind when it comes to drivers and compatible software, so despite all of my computers being 64-bit compatible I still stick with the 32-bit operating systems where I know I won't have troubles. :)

I agree with Ryan. I have never had much luck with 64 bit OS's either. I tried the 64 bit version of XP Pro a few years ago and the drivers were terrible.

Hopefully things pick up for the 64-bit though, because I heard the next version of Windows will probably only be offered in 64-bit.

I am sure things will change. I see Windows as well as other applications moving to the 64 bit architecture. It is just taking longer than was predicted a couple years ago.
