The Player is free which can only open existing VMware images of operating systems. The Workstation, which is not free, is what you need to do a fresh install of an operating system such as Windows. At least that is how I have always known it to be.

Hmm. I thought Workstation was free as well. It must have been at some point, cos I have a load of serial numbers for it. I wouldn't have paid for them.

There are ways to do a fresh install with the player, its just not as easy as with the Workstation version

There's always alternatives to getting a load of serial numbers.  ^-^

Maybe instead of sleep walking you just buy software while you sleep.  B)

No offense, but I'm not wrong.  8)

VMware Server and VMware Player are offered for free...not VMware Workstation...
http://www.vmware.com/products/free_virtualization.html

VMware Server
Quote
VMware Server installs on any existing server hardware and partitions a physical server into multiple virtual machines by abstracting processor, memory, storage and networking resources, giving you greater hardware utilization and flexibility.

VMware Player
Quote
VMware Player lets you evaluate new or pre-release software contained in virtual machines, without any installation or configuration hassles.

 :P

But if you want to drop $189 you can get VMware Workstation. :)

I just burned the ISO image of the new Ubuntu 6.10 to CD so I'll be installing it soon too!  It looks like there's a lot of documentation, help, and tutorials out there on how to use Ubuntu Linux so that's good for me!

I'll be in touch!  :)

Yeah, I would say that the forums are the most useful for Ubuntu. I just wish I could run it on my primary laptop but it doesn't support the fans...so it gets way too hot.  :-\

Saw this on Digg...Evidently there is a way to install Ubuntu from Windows:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=338279

Looks interesting...could be easier than burning the ISO to a CD.

Huh, just looked at the homepage for it and it really looks interesting. I think Ubuntu is easy to get going as it is...but they keep finding ways to make it easier. I'm pretty impressed.
