LAS VEGAS -- Since Wednesday evening, the beta version of Windows 7 has been available to select groups of developers. This morning, Microsoft opened up the beta to anyone who wants to download it.

Downloads are limited to 2.5 million, and it will only work until August.

Update: Microsoft has temporarily discontinued the downloads due to popular demand overloading the download servers.

In an interview, Mike Nash, the corporate vice president of Windows Product Management, who said he used to run Microsoft.com, said it was sometimes difficult to predict the expected load.

"The fact we're seeing such enthusiasm, that's just wow," he said.

May be because there are so many people desperately hoping Windows 7 will be better than Vista. Still find it hard to believe that Microsoft couldn't have predicted that there would be such a large demand.

There was a large demand for Vista Beta's as well. People just want to try out all of the latest products, and what sucks for Microsoft is that the people who typically like their products keep their mouth shut. It's really only the complainers that have a tendency to speak out.

Microsoft should have had an official torrent for the download.
