Black Friday
« on: November 27, 2008, 04:47:51 PM »
Recall, a couple years ago Ryan and Ashley camped out to get some Black Friday specials. Anyone going to do it this year?

While I am off until Sunday I don't have any desire to camp out. For one thing I don't like cold (okay so 50's aren't that cold). Besides I am very close to a Target, Big 5, Wal Mart, Big Lots and Radio Shack. Not too far from Staples and Office Max. Looking at the Sunday today's paper, I really didn't see anything that excited me. There are a few things I have thought about getting such as another monitor (but would need a new video card to support dual monitors). Then there is the 26" HDTV for under $300 at Target, although I think for another $100 I could get a 32" at Wal Mart, but I would need to get a stand, plus a new home theater receiver and of curse I would have to get a Blu-Ray DVD player. I've also been looking at getting a new digital camera as the one I have now is over 7-years old. Also toyed with the idea of getting a notebook computer, but don't really have a need for one. I've seen some good prices on the 8 GB iPod Nano's but again, I don't have a need for one.

It is not like I don't have the money or I am worried about my job (the slow economy is actually helping us). May be I am going to wait because I keep hearing the deals are going to last longer than just Friday and may even get better the closer we get to Christmas. I've even heard some people say they are going to wait until after Christmas.

Went to Wal Mart this morning. Busy but not overly crowded. Part of that may also be because it is an older Wal Mart which is being converted to a Super Center and also not in a high-density commercial area. I was there early enough to take advantage of the 'until 11:00 AM', specials. Bought mostly DVD's and a couple CD's. Got some great buys on the DVD's between the $2 & $6 specials but them price matching Target's price on the House, M.D. DVDs. Was able to get the first three seasons for $13.88 each.

In the evening I walked over to Target which was empty, a little busier than it was the day before Thanksgiving. Now I didn't even try to go near Best Buy or Circuit City (going out of business) or any of the malls. The local TV station was showing an aerial view of one of the malls and the parking lot was packed.

I live in New York and nearby in Long Island, a worker got trampled to death in a Walmart. It's all over the news. Terrible. I hope those people are happy with their new gadgets.

I didn't camp out anywhere other than next to my computer checking Amazon. :D

Then there was shoot-out at a Toys 'R' Us in Palm Desert, CA. They are saying it was gang related. All was quiet here.

We didn't go after any big deals this year either. We looked through all of the ads but there was nothing that really struck me as a must-have. Around noon we did venture out though to get some deals on clothes that our local outlet mall was having. The mall was pretty packed, but given the time of day people were a bit more civilized than they probably were earlier in the morning.

I did here the same thing as you Al about there being better deals over the next few weeks. I'll be keeping my eye out.
