Corrupted (?) WD 500 external hard drive
« on: October 30, 2008, 05:49:15 AM »
I bought a 500G WD external hardrive, and put about 200G of music from my Itunes (2000 albums). The other day, it simply crashed. It is not recognized by my laptop anymore. It shows as a drive under "My Computer," but when I click on it, nothing happens. The green "eye" on the drive stays on, but sometimes it shots down by itself...A nightmare.
What should I do? >:(
Is there any way I could get back my Itunes?

Have you tried plugging it into another computer to see if it's just a problem with your system recognizing it? Alternatively you could try getting a Live CD of a Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu, and boot from that. Then you can plug in your drive to see if it can recognize it.

I plugged it in 3 other laptops. All of them would freeze at some point, and need rebooting. One of them recognize it as an exterior drive, but when I click on it, the hourglass keeps spinning forever, and eventually I have to restart the whole thing.

It does sound like the drive is corrupt. The only thing that could possibly help you now is being able to put the drive internally in a desktop computer. I'm not sure if the results would be any better though.
