Open-Source Predictions for 2007
« on: December 29, 2006, 08:50:02 PM »
Once again I have no idear where to put this (how about an Open Source category) so I'll put it here...

Quote
Open source came out on strong in 2006.

Open-source web browser Firefox gained market share against Microsoft?s Internet Explorer with more than 200 million downloads. OpenOffice.org, the open-source productivity suite, was used on desktops by more than 200 million people.

I noticed an interesting and promising common theme throughout the article: Linux.

There we go, I made it a freeware/open source category because I think the two kinda go hand in hand.

I think the article meant 2007 and not 2008:
Quote
Open-source advocates are promising more to come in 2008. Here are some of the predictions open-source experts are making for the coming year.

And with as much as I like Vista I think this is a very valid point:
Quote
Vista flops in wake of open source competition

Open source advocates would like to believe that Vista, the new version of Microsoft Windows operating system, will fail to appeal to businesses and consumers because of its high cost, security issues, and closed nature (see Linux Faithful: Vista No Threat and Vista is Bad for You, FSF Says). ?Vista won?t set the world on fire,? says open-source supporter Eric Raymond. ?It will limp through 2007 looking lamer and lamer as it becomes evident that it?s not more than a glorified service pack, and one that completely fails to solve Microsoft?s security and reliability problems.?

I don't think most people are going to switch to Windows Vista until it comes pre-installed on their PC's.

I would say the same or until Mozilla stops supporting Windows XP. May be with Firefox 4 but that won't be out until late 2008.  Even so that would just make want to switch over to Linux.

Thanks for the new category BTW. 0:-)

I think Firefox will have to support XP for a long time because it will be awhile before people really start upgrading their machines. I mean they just stopped supporting Windows 95/98 and look at how long those have been out for.

Remember, the only reason they stop Win 95/98/Me support was because Microsoft did with IE7.  I had read (I think on the mozillaZine forums) that it would be unlikely to discontinue WinXP support unless there was major market shift and the example they gave was Linux.

To stop supporting XP this early in the Vista game would be stupid! It would truely be comparable to stopping support for Linux,  so I dont think it will happen.

In 5 years time though, who knows where we will be!

Looks into crystal ball....99% of former Windows XP users and Vista users have moved to Linux.  Also, Microsoft is putting out Service Packs for Windows Vista on a monthly basis.  X-D

;D
This made me laugh out loud!

However, I would not put it past Microsoft to drop support for XP rather quickly so they can force people to move to Vista.

Imagine the backlash.  People would rather go to Linux then spend a ton of money to upgrade their systems (or buy a whole new one) just so they can run Vista.

I couldn't help but laugh at that as well.  X-D

I wish Linux was a little further along on Windows compatibility than they currently are. That way when Vista is released it would tempt people even more to switch...but with the current state of Linux (not extremely user friendly, Ubuntu is getting there though) I don't think users will stray from Windows.
