Here's wishing anyone on the gulf coast good luck when Gustav makes landfall.  Evacuate if you need to now, looks like the traffic is already a snarly mess.  I will post pics and maybe some video of the backyard after the storm comes though and we get power back.

I hope it doesn't hit too hard. I'm not sure where you're located, but it sounds as though you're in the path of the storm. Hope everything is okay for you!

Going without the internet was bad, going without AC was killer.  Made it almost impossible to sleep, had all the windows open for a breeze at night but then you had to get used to the sound of the generators in the neighborhood.

I am one of the lucky ones, there will be people without power for 2 to 3 more weeks, maybe longer if they have to get a tree of their house.

We had a huge monsoon storm hit right before labor day. There was a section of Phoenix without power for about 4-days after a lightning strike hit a power pole. The resulting strike (combined with 75+ MPH winds) obliterated the pole and caused the remaining poles to snap like toothpicks. It was nearly a mile of downed power poles. Unlike hurricanes we have may be an hour at most notice on these monsoon storms and we really don't know how strong they are going to be or where they are going to head.

Well I am glad that we at least have some warning for the storms.  The amazing energy people have really been great! We went from 100% of Baton Rouge without power to 40% without power in 10 days.

Here it wasn't just the poles that snapped but the giant metal thingys (that's a technical term) that send the power to the wooden poles went down, the news said something like 400 of them.  So the power companies had to get not only the infrastructure up and running again but also the outerstucture (another technical term.)

I'm glad to see that the power is getting back up for you! I couldn't imagine going without power for so long... it'd definitely be hard to do.
