Which Java Runtime Environment components can I remove?
« on: August 02, 2008, 04:45:54 PM »
I got these updates, but I assume I don't need to have all of them installed for Java to work. Which of these can I uninstall?

Also, is it better to uninstall from the Control Panel or use an uninstaller like Revo Uninstaller?

You should be able to keep the latest version Java(TM) 6 Update 7. I know I have to go through once in a while and clean out the older versions.

Why can't the installer, un-install all previous versions then install latest version i was still on update 3 so updated to 7 and deleted all other old versions

Because that would be logical and we all know there is nothing logical about computers.

I'm not sure if you can uninstall any of those without it removing the entire program. What I think happens is when a new version of Java is installed it overwrites the files, but doesn't remove the old entry from the Add/Remove Programs. That means when you go to uninstall one version it will actually uninstall the entire app.

I could be wrong, but you can probably easily figure this out by going into the Program Files folder, and finding where Java is installed (make sure to look inside the Java folder as well). If there is a separate folder for each version you can safely uninstall each old one, otherwise if there is just one Java folder you probably don't want to uninstall any of the older versions.

I would check this out on my Windows PC, but I don't install Java on it so I'm not sure where it creates its directories and whatnot. Hope that helps.

Here's my Java folder in Program Files:

So I guess it's safe to remove all those except Java 6 Update 7?

Yep, you should be okay to remove them all except the last update. Man, that's terrible since it keeps all of the past updates in full. Each one is taking up like 130MB on your computer!

In the worst case you'd just have to reinstall the latest version again, but I'm guessing you should be okay to remove them all except for the Update 7.

Does it matter if I use Revo or Add/Remove Programs in the CP? I remember in another post I asked about uninstalling the Microsoft framework and someone suggested it's better to uninstall from Add/Remove.

I would probably use the Add/Remove just so that it's not overly thorough like Revo might be. Revo might try to remove files related to one of the other updates.

Cool! Now that you were the "test subject" and all works, I can do the same with mine!  ;)

:D I have yet to restart my computer, so maybe things will go haywire then. But if anything goes wrong, the fix is as easy as reinstalling Java.

I may have to write an article on this considering how much room it can potentially free up.
