I just wanted to get your guys thoughts on what you think is the best video converter that is Vista compatible for converting AVI files to MP4?  I am specifically looking so that I can convert some of these AVI files I have to be able to play back on the PS3.

If you prefer straightforward command-line stuff, try mencoder. It works something like this:
Quote
USAGE: mencoder inputfile -oac audiocodec -ovc videocodec -o outputfile
EXAMPLE: mencoder dvd://1 -oac mp3lame -ovc lavc -o outputfile.avi
The example command will rip DVD title 1 to outputfile.avi.
I'm not sure about the parameters for exporting to MP4 though, but it should be possible.

You probably prefer a GUI though. In that case, give SUPER a go. It's basically just a GUI for mencoder. Ryan wrote about it way back in 2006: http://cybernetnews.com/2006/10/13/super-is-the-ultimate-video-converter/

I don't know what dimension you'll need to pick, you've gotta look up what's suitable for the PS3.

Ok, Super is the perfect program, however, it is incompatible with Windows Vista!  This really sucks!  I wonder if he plans to make it Vista compatible.

Ouch, that sucks indeed. :(

Frankly, I'm out of ideas. Perhaps you could browse Download.com's software directory, but I don't have time for that right now.

Actually I have just figured out that it is something with the Vista Ultimate install on my desktop as it works perfectly fine on my Toshiba notebook that has Vista Home Premium installed on it.

The Vista Ultimate I installed was the OEM copy and I remember the install not following exactly like the OEM install documentation said it should.  It appeared to work fine though.  However, I have noticed some weird things going on for a while.  So, when I upgrade my computer in a few months, I plan to buy the retail copy of Vista Home Premium seeing as the Ultimate Extras do not exist like promised and I see no reason to have Ultimate.

Thanks for recommending Super as it is exactly what I was looking for.

Why don't try Ubuntu 8.04 LTS when you next upgrade as it wont cost you to try it before you buy Vista again

Because I am not a Linux person and am a Windows person.  There are just too many programs that I use for both work and personal, and do not have enough time to learn separate programs.  The things I learn at home or at work transfer to each side.  Also my favorite game is only for MS Windows.

Another option, if you AVI files aren't overwhelmingly big, is to use an online conversion such as Zamzar.com

The open source Media Coder is another program that might work for you: http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/index.htm

Just stumbled upon doubleTwist, an audio/video converter that knows which format your iPods, PSPs and so on require. I'm not sure if they support PS3s though. Ah well, at least you can always enter the PS3 video settings manually.
