Unknown cookies/security concerns
« on: April 09, 2008, 09:07:39 AM »
I'd appreciate some advice about this. I've just checked the file containing cookies on my lap top and found 2 obviously from a pornographic sites by the names on them, but I don't view those sort of sites. Nobody else has access to my lap top. The only thing that rings a bell happened a few weeks ago; I was on an ordinary overseas retail site and clicked on an innocent looking link that popped up, but which then tried to show me a porno video. It wouldn't switch off or close down in the normal way and so, panicking a bit, I hit the power down button. That's the only thing that I can connect to these two cookies. I wouldn't be so concerned, except this was my work lap top and I don't want to be accused of contravening the IT policy (not that i've read it!). The lap top has the free comodo internet firewall on it, I replaced Norton with it as Norton was slowing my computer down. Sorry if it's a dumb query, but my IT knowledge is pretty basic :-[.
Any advice or explanation would be welcome.

I'm sure that ad you saw is the source of the cookies. There are a lot of different sites that have questionable ads like this on them. If you ever visit a BitTorrent site, such as The Pirate Bay, you'll likely run into the same sort of stuff.
