Best Buy Backing Blu-Ray
« on: February 13, 2008, 05:56:07 PM »
Best Buy in March is going to start to recommend Blu-Ray to customers.  You can read the story at: http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSWNAS040320080211?

HD-DVD is on it's way out and at this rate I would expect it to be dead within a year, or two at the latest.

I wonder what they mean by "recommend". I wonder how long they'll actually be carrying HD DVD then?

From what I understand, they will have a bigger presence of Blu-Ray and will prominently display Blu-Ray players, movies, etc.  I would also suspect that they will train their employees to push Blu-Ray over HD-DVD.  As for HD-DVD, they plan to still sell them for those that want them, the will just not hype them.

Also, Netflix is apparently discontinuing their HD-DVD library soon. Why won't they just leave them floating around? Perhaps Blu-Ray paid them money to do this...

This was a BIG sign to me that the war was over and HD DVD had lost.

I know, but I preferred HD DVD because of the name and logo. ;)

I was a Blu-ray supporter from day 1 so this news is awesome. Rumor is that on Feb 15, Paramount might announce that they're going to back Blu-ray as well. But that's just a rumor, and like all others, there's a high chance it will turn out to be untrue. But the clock is ticking for Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal to switch over to the Blu side.

I just read that DeepDiscount.com has some HD DVD for $12.50! Now that is an insanely low price.

I am really hoping that once the format war is over, (and Blu-Ray wins) that the price will start dropping.  I still do not believe the minor added quality and better menuing system is worth the extra cost over regular DVD's.

I wanted HD-DVD to win too...mostly because I would've been able to play all of my old DVD's on it.

Now, since I can't play them on a Blu-Ray machine, I'm stuck.  :-[

That's not gonna happen. Blu-Ray now has the monopoly on next-gen DVD formats.

I firmly believe that it will happen some time after Blu-Ray wins.  it's just simple economics.  Look at any new technology, the price always lowers after it has been out.
