Google + Firefox Homepage
« on: November 14, 2007, 09:12:13 PM »
I just noticed something new on my homepage in Firefox. I've been using the default Firefox homepage since I installed Firefox, and only noticed this [look at the top- the bar is the same bar I see in Gmail, Google Docs, etc.] now:

Is this new, or just new for me?

I'm really surprised that Mozilla did that. I love Google and all, but it's really starting to takeover the browser. First the search box in the browser and on the homepage, then the secure browsing detection, and now they are adding even more the search homepage? It's going to end up becoming the Google browser.

Guys, this is very old. I think it come out with 2.0 beta or some time like that, maybe even 1.5 it set that as the home page on fresh profiles or installs with new profiles. It was considered neat back then, but that's before all the anti google stuff started. You know back when they could do no wrong. LOL

The stuff at the top when you are logged in is somewhat newer, but that is attached to anything you may be signed in for with google. For me it's gmail that it does that with. I'm pretty sure there is a way to op-out of that but I can't remember how. Never really tried myself. Google started that when they started merging all their services.. like the office stuff and the webhosting and so on. For me it doesn't just have that at the top of the Firefox google page but at the regular google search page as well.

This is why I use a blank home page we used to call about:blank back in the IE days. And it works in Firefox too!

And have you guys noticed all the parameters that Firefox passes on to Google when searching for something?

You don't even need these!

It's terrifying.

All we were talking about was the navigation along the top pointing to other Google services, but we knew that the homepage has been around for awhile.

That has always irked me, and I wish that they would even format it the way that SearchMash (their testbed for new ideas) does:

http://www.searchmash.com/search/test

It looks so much prettier.  <3

Or you could set up a keyword search bookmark for Google: http://www.google.com/search?q=%s (put the letter g in the Keyword field).

The extra parameters in the search string just tell Google that someone was using the Google search box in Firefox. That determines how much Mozilla gets payed.
