I just got a chance to try out a Webware PC: a computer built around the new P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP motherboard from Asus. What makes this motherboard be hardware for Webware is that it has a Firefox Web browser (running on an embedded Linux operating system) burned into ROM. It also has Skype. You turn it on, and in fifteen seconds (I timed it), you can be in Firefox and surfing the Web.

So whenever you want to look up something real quick, this is a really cool thing to have.

For more information on the ASUS - http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=869

Phoronix does a deep look at it covering 8 pages

It seems a excellent idea

That is very cool, although I think it has limited appeal in the long term. When you get a full blown OS loaded into flash memory that will have a lot of appeal.

So maybe an online "operating system" really is the future? I can't see it happening, but the Web is evolving so quick that I have no idea what to expect anymore.

Yeah Ryan... I think you're onto something! Maybe this is how computers will work in the future: you boot them, you wait 15 seconds, Firefox launches and then your computer displays an online login screen.

Thumbs up, because this way you'll be able to access your web OS on any computer.
Thumbs down, because you don't know what they're doing with your files.

Well, maybe it's not that interesting after all. I think I'll just keep working the way I do now.
